What Is Windows Server 2022 Standard?

Windows Server 2022 Standard is Microsoft's latest server operating system, built for businesses that need a reliable, secure, and scalable platform for running workloads, hosting applications, managing users, and enabling virtualization.

Core-based licensing explained: Microsoft licenses Server 2022 per physical processor core. Every server must be licensed for a minimum of 16 cores (8 cores per processor x 2 processors). This 16-Core license is the entry point — it covers one physical server with up to 8 cores per CPU. If your server has more than 16 total cores, additional 2-Core add-on licenses are required.

Standard vs. Datacenter: The Standard edition includes 2 Hyper-V virtual machine licenses. The Datacenter edition offers unlimited VMs and is designed for highly virtualized or cloud-scale environments. For most SMBs and single-server setups, Standard is the right choice.

What is NOT included: Client Access Licenses (CALs) are required separately for every user or device that connects to this server. CALs are available as separate line items in our store.

Important: CALs are not included.

Every user or device accessing this server requires a Windows Server 2022 User CAL or Device CAL, sold separately. This license covers the server OS only.

Q How do I receive my license key after purchase?
Your 25-character product key is sent to your email address within 60 seconds of payment confirmation. Check your spam folder if you do not see it within a few minutes.
Q Does this license cover a server with more than 16 cores?
No. This 16-Core license is the minimum entry point and covers exactly 16 physical cores (8 per processor, minimum 2 processors). If your server has more than 16 total cores, you must purchase additional 2-Core add-on licenses to remain compliant with Microsoft's licensing terms.
Q Are CALs (Client Access Licenses) included?
No. CALs are not included and must be purchased separately. Every user or device that connects to this server requires either a Windows Server 2022 User CAL or Device CAL. We offer these as separate products in our store.
